Korean. Fried. Chicken. The team behind Candelaria, Mary Celeste, and Glass are committed to making Paris even more awesome than it already was. As if tacos were not enough to make me love them forever.
While the founders were on a research trip to Hong Kong with the chef, Haan (previously at Mary Celeste), they came up with the idea to add Korean Fried Chicken to the Paris dining scene. Korean style means it’s double fried for maximum crispiness, so that all your fried chicken dreams can come true. And of course it’s done in style.
It’s a beautiful space, with great little touches, like the lamps, peanut chopstick-holder, and the gorgeous sink in the middle of the room for washing your hands post chicken-devouring.
Your chicken options: Half or whole.
Your sauce options: Spicy Gochu Jang (sweet & spicy Korean red chili sauce), sweet garlic, or plain
Your cocktail options: Playful and plentiful
The cocktail menu is all new for Hero, and as we know from Candelaria (voted best bar in Europe last year by The World’s 50 Best Bars), Mary Celeste, and Glass, this team knows how to make a cocktail. We got Bubble Trouble with tapioca pearls, absinthe, and almond milk, and Thug Life with mezal, yuzu, and ginger beer. My friend who joined me for Hero dinner round two (normal), got “Nice Legs”, made of litchi, rose, aperol & Prosecco.
Do not miss the pork bun. I repeat, do not miss the pork bun.
I’m thrilled about this place, and if you’re not, I’m concerned. If you love spicy food – so hard to come by in Paris – you’ll love the spicy fried chicken. I typically try to stay away from fried foods, but this will be hard to resist. Crispy outside, hot and juicy inside – all the chicken dreams. All of them.
An extra bonus to look forward to is that they will soon be opening the downstairs’ private six-seater table, “Superhero”, for special dinners including guest chefs and tasting menus.
What else is missing from the Paris dining scene that should be added? Looks like these people can do anything, so let’s start a petition and see what they’ll do next.
What to get:
Order the “moitié/moitié” option (halfsies) where you can pick 2 of the 3 flavors: plain, sweet garlic, or spicy. Get the sweet garlic & spicy if you can handle the heat, or just go au naturel if you’re not a sauce person (weirdo). My favorite sides were the kimchi, noodle salad, and rice cakes, with the pork bun as the reigning champion.
How much you’ll pay:
23 euros for a half bird (2-3 people, depending on hunger and how many sides); 43 euros for a whole; sides average 7-9 euros each. Cocktails 7-12 euros.
Where to get it:
